History of the Packard Light Eight

In 1932, Packard introduced the 900 or Light Eight model. Designed as an entry-level model to compete with Buick, the 900 was the first and only Packard to feature the unique shovel nose grill, a styling cue that led many to refer to the Packard 900 as one of the most beautiful marques ever built. A refined compression ratio raised the output of the 320 cubic inch Straight Eight to 110 horsepower, while a new chassis stretched the unique wheelbase to 127.75. Four different body styles were available: a 5-passenger Coupe Sedan, a Coupe Roadster, a Stationary Coupe and the elegant 5-passenger Sedan. Ride control suspension allowed the driver to adjust the shocks to their preference, and Packards excellent craftsmanship provided consumers with the luxury of a Packard at a fraction of the price compared to their other models. While the 900 Light Eight line drew strong sales figures, the high price of construction and loss of interest in the Standard Eight line resulted in Packard removing the 900 for 1933. Approximately 6,750 Packard 900s were built; their unique styling and one-year-only appeal make them highly sought-after by enthusiasts across the globe today.
