After almost four full years of being without new cars and trucks, the American public was anxious to buy something new that Detroit cranked out after World War II ended in 1945. Manufacturers were quick to roll out 1946 models since the war in 1942 models. This Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Coupe is one such example and at that time, it was the only ragtop Cadillac sold. It is one of 6,755 Cadillac convertible coupes made in 1947. This example was made in General Motors Detroit, Michigan assembly plant. Dressed in Beldon Blue Metallic, the cars paint and trim are in overall very good order but showing age from an older restoration in 1996. The contrasting tan top is in very good shape (code 2). The cars chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body, the engine bay is tidy having been restored and the cargo area is in good shape and comes with a full-sized spare tire and a fire extinguisher. This car rolls on older Firestone gum-dipped wide whitewall tires, size 7.00-15 at each corner. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheel and topped with a factory chrome hubcap. All tires and hubcaps are in very good order. This car has independent coil spring front suspension and a semi-floating rear axle and semi-elliptical rear leaf springs along with four-wheel drum brakes. Under the hood is Cadillacs Monobloc 346 CID V-8 engine which is understood to have been rebuilt during pior restoration.. The monoblocs cylinders and crankcase were cast as a single unit and it used hydraulic valve lifters for durability. This design allowed the creation of the mid-priced Series 60 line. Backing this motor is a Hydramatic four-speed automatic transmission and a 3.77:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include Hydro-Lectric power windows. Insides is a blue leather upholstered interior with cream trim. The front and rear bench seats look good overall. A contrasting cream stripe runs around the interior, from just under the rear side window on the drivers side, along the dash and ends beneath the passenger side rear side window. Fuel/Temp gauge are inop. The matching blue carpet is in satisfactory order. Theres a cream, three-spoke steering wheel that frames a full array of gauges. A clock is in front of the passenger with a chrome cast factory AM radio in the top center of the dash. Theres also an underdash heater. A column-mounted shifter completes the interior. The vehicle was previously purchased in 1985 and in 1996, a lot of restoration was done, the motor and transmission, wiring and hydraulics were all gone through. In 1997 the car was awarded a senior status by Classic Car Club of America with a score of 97.25. The 1947 models received minor styling changes and the addition of Hydro-Lectric window lifts on the Series 62 convertible, which remained the sole ragtop in Cadillacs lineup. Polished metal stone guards on the fenders replaced the rubber ones used on 1946 models. As before, Series 62s remained Cadillacs bread-and-butter lineup with 39,834 produced, 84% of the makes total 1947 volume. Droptop competition to this Cadillac in 1947 included Buicks Roadmaster Series 70 Convertible, Chryslers New Yorker Convertible Coupe, Mercurys Eight Convertible, Lincolns Convertible Coupe and Oldsmobiles 98 Custom Eight Cruiser. If youre a fan of postwar GM cars, consider this Cadillac Convertible. If you collect Wreath and Crest models, this one might make an excellent candidate to add to your collection.
