1950 Mercedes-Benz 170

Price: USD $69,000

Post-World War II Mercedes vehicles continue to become harder to find this is one of the few that was offered post WWII out of Germany. With their flowing curves, rounded corners and coach doors, it is easy to see why. This is one of only a handful of Cabriolet B examples made in 1950. This example was made in Mercedes Stuttgart, West German factory. It is dressed in silver with a matching new folding cloth top. The cars paint and trim are in overall very good order, though there is a blemish upon closer inspection. The chrome wraparound bumpers look great, the engine bay is very tidy and the cargo area is clean. A full-sized spare tire resides in the trunk. The car has been mechanically restored at one time with no modifications to an all-original condition. It rolls on newer bias-ply tires, mounted on steel wheels mounted on steel wheels with body-colored center caps. The wheels and tires are all in very good order. This is a very solid car with no signs of previous repair, the trunk is fitted with a rarely seen factory luggage and jack. Under the hood is a mechanically-restored 1.8L side-valve four-cylinder engine (code M136). Backing this motor is a four-speed manual transmission with a 4.375:1 rear end. Inside, the front red leather bench seats, split folding the rear has been reupholstered in vinyl. The black carpeting is in good, original shape. A wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel frames a burled walnut dash, which has VDO gauges, including a clock and tachometer service light on dash is on. The red, inner door panels look good and a floor-mounted gearshift completes the interior. Since the war, the only version of the Mercedes-Benz 170 V available to the public had come with a four-door sedan/saloon body. With the advent of the 170 S, the manufacturer recalled some of the wider range of bodies offered on the 170 V before the war, adding a two-seat Cabriolet A and a four-seat Cabriolet B. This Mercedes was owned for 48 years by nationally known Phenix, AZ celebrity John Patrick Pat McMahon, who is long known for his numerous characters on the Wallace and Ladmo Show broadcast on KPHO-TV. He is also a longstanding fixture in the Phoenix broadcasting scene, where he has worked as program director, disc jockey and nationally known talk-show host. Original Arizona souvenir title included as proof. Competition to this Mercedes in 1950 included MGs TD.
