The Lotus Elite was a revolutionary sportscar that hit the scene years ahead of its time. Designed by Frank Costin with styling by Peter Kirwan-Taylor the Elite featured a highly advanced fiberglass monocoque body to which engineers bonded a steel subframe and roll structure. Unlike fiberglass cars like the Corvette and Kaiser-Darrin the Elite had no separate steel chassis making it extremely light and agile and with eager Coventry Climax power a formidable giant-killer on the track.This car is a Series 2 example sold new in California to Jay Chamberlain one of the first American Importers of Lotus cars. It was then sold to Dennis Ortenburger author of The Original Lotus Elite: Racing Car for the Road and one of the worlds foremost experts on the model who owned the car for 47 years. After changing hands in 2013 the Elite underwent a thorough restoration and is now powered by a larger and more powerful 1500 cc Climax FWB engine.
