*1962 Ford Thunderbird*When the third generation of the Ford Thunderbird debuted it ushered in the concept of the personal luxury coupe to the world. Longer lower and wider than the previous Thunderbirds the design commanded more attention than almost anything on the road and came exceptionally well equipped from the factory with a suite of modern options. Available in both coupe and convertible the third generation Thunderbird remained largely similar through its three year run.The one big change that came about in 1962 was the option of the Sports Roadster package- in Fords efforts to make the car look even more sporty. Buyers were able to select this package which added Kelsey Hayes wire wheels and a fiberglass tonneau cover over the rear seats that covered the cloth convertible top and gave the car a stunning two seat roadster look. This package did not sell particularly well as it was expensive and ultimately made the car less practical but in light of that has made it quite collectible today.Finished in Rangoon Red and fitted with the Sports Roadster package this 1962 Thunderbird was treated to a complete ground-up restoration in the early 1990s and has been properly stored in a climate controlled facility ever since. Rangoon Red is without a doubt one of the best colors available for this generation Thunderbird and the extensive and well finished chrome trim on the front and rear clip when paired with the optional Kelsey Hayes wire wheels makes for a truly fantastic looking car.On the inside black vinyl covers the spacious front bucket seats as well as the center console and dashboard. As this Thunderbird was built in the peak of the space-age swathes of stunning stainless trim are present on the dashboard and center console that give it a spectacular look. One particularly unique thing about this Thunderbird is they way that the dashboard wraps around to meet the doors giving it a true cockpit-like feel and this is accentuated when the top is down and the rear tonneau cover is showing off the driver and passenger seat humps on the back. A 390ci V8 powers the Thunderbird which is connected to a 3-speed automatic gearbox and offers plenty of power to move this luxury vehicle around.In total Ford produced a mere 1 427 Sport Roadsters in 1962 and it is without a doubt one of the most desirable variants of classic Thunderbird. Included with this Thunderbird is a letter to the previous owner from Ms. Thunderbird Lois Eminger with information about the car as well as all of the original Ford documents.
