Besides Mustang and the Pinto, what was Fords other economy car during the mid1970s? Thats right, the Maverick MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1977 Maverick Coupe. This example is a fully restored car that spent most of its life in California.

Built at Fords Claycomo, Missouri factory in December 10, 1976, this car is finished in Light Green (code 47) with a Dark Emerald Odensestyle vinyl roof (code HQ) custom pinstriping and a green vinyl and cloth interior (code QG). It was originally delivered to the Seattle, Washington region. The cars paint and trim are in overall very good order though there are some minor blemishes on the hood and vinyl roof.

The Mavericks glass windows are in very good order while the lights, bodywork and chrome bumpers are all in excellent condition. The cars engine bay is extremely tidy, the battery appears new. This Maverick rolls on BFGoodrich Radial TA tires, surrounding styled steel wheels with trim rings.

Under the hood is Fords 250 CID Thriftpower inline sixcylinder engine with Dura Spark Ignition (VIN code L) buttoned to a C4 CruiseOMatic threespeed automatic transmission (code W) with 2.79:1 gearing (code 3). 77 Mavericks also had front disc brakes with no power assist and a 19.2gallon gas tank as standard equipment.

Inside, the car has a green vinyl and cloth interior (code QG). The front buckets and rear bench seats are in very good shape, as is the green, cut pile carpeting and the headliner. The factory twospoke steering wheel is present and in betterthanaverage condition while the green instrument panel and inner door panels reflect the rest of the interiors theme. Speedometers in 1977 were revised to display miles per hour and kilometers per hour. Completing the interior is a Kenwood AM/FM stereo with CD player.

The Maverick was originally conceived and marketed as a subcompact import fighter, intended to do battle with theVolkswagen Beetleand newer Japanese rivals for North America fromHonda,Datsun andToyota. TheFalcon, Fords compact offering since 1960 and main rival to theChevrolet NovaandDodge Dart, had seen its sales decimated by the introduction of theMustangin 1964 and despite a redesign in 1966, was unable to meet the then forthcoming U.S.National Highway Traffic Safety Administrationmotor vehicle standards that would come into effect on January 1, 1970. Consequently, the Falcon was discontinued midway through the 1970 model year and the Maverick repositioned as Fords compact entry, giving the Nova and Dart a new rival. A bigger Falcon was a rebranded lowtrim version of theFairlanefor the second half of the model year, then went away.

The Mavericks styling featured the long hood, fastbackroof and short deck popularized by the Mustang, on a 103inch wheelbase and featured popout rear side windows.

Nearly 579,000 Mavericks were produced in its first year, approaching the recordsetting first year of Mustang sales (nearly 619,000)and easily outpaced the Mustangs sales of fewer than 200,000 in 1970. Ford only sold 40,086 77 Maverick coupes in 1977, in its final year of production.

Documentation includes original owners manual and a copy of Family Circle Magazines 16page booklet, The Womans Guide to Car Maintenance, Repair and Emergencies.

Competition to this Maverick in 1977 included AMCs Hornet, Buicks Skyhawk, Chevrolets Monza and Vega, Datsuns 710, Dodges Colt, Fords Mustang II and Pinto, Hondas Civic and Accord, Mazdas RX3, Mercurys Capri and Comet, Oldsmobiles Starfire, Pontiacs Sunbird and Astre, Plymouths Arrow and Toyotas Celica and Corolla.
