By the mid 1970_s Aston Martin was experiencing some financial trouble from stiff competition, but rather than folding under pressure, Aston Martin turned to designer William Towns who penned Aston Martin_s most lavish automobile to date. The Lagonda, Aston_s first 4 door sedan, featured computer management and an electronic solid state digital dashboard both automotive firsts. Almost immediately the order book filled up with customers who were required to send in a $10,000 down payment just to be put on the waiting list. Exquisite craftsmanship was clearly evident as the car was completely hand assembled, with every fender and crisp line formed from the techniques used by Aston for decades before. No detail was over looked including the 20 coats of paint per car. The full leather interior used nine hides, each hand selected. Power was derived from a hand assembled 5.3 litre dual-overhead-cam V8 that produced 280hp, giving the new Lagonda a 0-60 time of 7 seconds. Production only averaged about one car a week with every car taking over three months to complete. Road & Track magazine reviewed the car in 1982 and simply stated the Lagonda has _Ferrari performance and Rolls-Royce luxury at a price you can_t afford._ Considering that the price eventually pushed $200,000 meant the Lagonda was only reserved for some of the most affluent clientele across the globe. The series IV Lagonda was introduced in 1987 at the Geneva Motor Show, the slight redesign was again drawn by William Towns who softened the edges of the new car while eliminating the pop up headlights that were featured on the series II & III cars. Production would end in 1989 with only 106 Series IV Lagonda_s constructed. The extremely low production numbers, unmatched quality, legendary performance and new technology was a huge leap forward for automotive design and again showed the world that Aston Martin was and will forever be a leader in the luxury car market. The 1989 Aston Martin Lagonda Series IV featured here is finished in stunning Dark Royal Blue with an impeccably kept beige leather interior.
