*2005 Maserati Gran Sport*To many the brand name Maserati invokes images of famous 1950s racing cars being driven flat out on race tracks around the world and stunning grand touring cars streaking across the Autostrada in 1960s Italy. But in the mid-1990s as the company entered its 8th decade of production they were in a serious slump. Having pulled out of the American market in the early 90s and without money to develop a new product line Maserati was in trouble. In 1994 Italian automotive giant Fiat stepped in to help prop the company up financially but the real change happened when Ferrari acquired a 50% stake in the company in 1997. By 1999 Ferrari had taken control of the company and set out to turn Maserati into the luxury division of the famed super car builder. They begun by moving Maserati out of the factory they had been building cars in since the 1940s and into a modern facility and in 2001 they debuted the car that would save the company. A pair of cars known simply as the Maserati Coupe and Maserati Spider were shown at the 2001 Frankfurt Motorshow and created a stir around the world. The coupe was based off the existing European only 3200GT but both the Coupe and Spider were designed for the world market and featured a Ferrari derived dry sump 4.2-Liter V8 under the hood. Upon its release the Maserati twins proved to be a sales hit for the company the stunning Italian looks and brilliant Ferrari engine that used to only be available with a prancing horse on the hood were now able to be cross shopped with a Porsche 911.At the Geneva Motorshow in 2004 Maserati unveiled the even more sporting version of the Coupe and Spider that was now known as the Gran Sport. A subtly redesigned body gave the car a more aggressive look and also helped improve aerodynamics dramatically and the engine suspension gearbox and interior had all been updated-improving the car significantly. This 2005 Gran Sport is a perfect example of what Maserati was capable of at the time- having been lovingly cared for by a single local owner from new this car shows just over 41 900 miles and is just asking to be driven hard! The exterior of the car is painted in a fantastic shade of silver that shows off the lines of the Gran Sport and accents the revised lower body kit perfectly. The wheels are the classic 19 light alloy design that echo those found on the Maserati Super Trofeo race cars and surround the optional red brake calipers. The polished front and rear mesh grilles add a bit of shine to the exterior while still being purposeful and really ties the whole exterior together. When you open the door the first thing that you notice are the heavily bolstered front bucket seats- a combination of leather and fabric these seats do an impressive job of hugging you in the turns while remaining comfortable on a long road trip. The thick rimmed sport steering wheel is accented with a strip of carbon fiber along the top and frames a set of Maseratis signature blue gauges. An optional Becker premium stereo sits in the center console and features a 6 CD changer.The Ferrari derived 4.2-Liter V8 under the hood produces 400 horsepower at 7 000RPM and sounds outstanding thanks to a fully redesigned exhaust system that Maserati developed for the Gran Sport. The power is fed through a 6-Speed automated manual transaxle with paddle shifters- known as the Cambiocorsa this gearbox is capable of lightning fast shifting but can also be used as an automatic when driving around town. One of the things that Maserati became known for in this generation of car was their Skyhook suspension. This is a traditional spring and shock setup but with electronic damping that senses the road surface and adjusts the suspension over 40 times a second for ultimate roadholding and comfort. This Gran Sport is in top mechanical condition with a thorough service history most recently having completed an annual service in August of 2021.
